WWII project funded by a grant of £81,600

Birkenhead High School was awarded a grant of £81,600 to restore the WWII tunnels beneath their school.

Nicola Collins, Fundraising Manager, Birkenhead High School Academy, Prenton, Merseyside (1,099 pupils): 'In 2010, Birkenhead High School Academy underwent an extensive rebuild. During this time some WWII tunnels were unearthed which had been built in 1940 for pupils and staff. Despite their age, the shelters were in reasonable condition, so we decided to seek funding to restore them and open them as a piece of living history for the local community.
